ELEVEN-FACE TO FACE

Grace parked her Jaguar on the side of the road and got out. She walked down the street and made a left at the next corner. When she made it to the front of a house, she stood there momentarily and gathered her thoughts before walking up the porch and ringing the bell. As Grace waited for someone to answer, she peered around at her surroundings.

Shortly the door opened. His eyes were wide and he appeared to be shocked. Grace exchanged stares with him, her words caught in her throat. Kardale stepped back and allowed her to step inside and then he closed the door behind her. He looked her up and down and admired her beauty. Grace hadn’t changed a bit since college. No matter how hard he tried not to, he couldn’t help but stare.

Kardale snapped out of his quick daydream. “How did you know where I live?”

“It’s amazing what the Internet is capable of,” Grace said. “What were you and Randy talking about earlier?”

“I’m sorry, I can’t tell you that Grace,” said Kardale.

“Oh really, I thought we were friends?”

“What are you doing here Grace?”

“Did you listen to the message I left over the weekend?”

“No, I didn’t,” Kardale lied as he sat down on his couch.

“Well can I sit down for a minute so we can talk?”

Kardale sighed with a reluctant look across his face. “Sure, have a seat Grace.”

“This won’t take long.”

She sat down so close to him that she caused Kardale to scoot over a little. She knew he was uncomfortable so she scooted away as well.

“Well,” said Kardale as he waited impatiently.

Grace could see the irritation on Kardale’s face so she started talking.

“I don’t know if I can keep holding this inside. I know what happened between us was over a decade ago, but I have dreams about it. As a matter of fact, I’ve been having dreams about it for a long time, but lately it’s been happening every night. I think we should tell him about it,” she finally said.

“Hell no, we can’t do that. Do you know what kind of drama that would start?”

“I understand, but it seems like he knows something already.”

“What makes you think that?”

“Because he accuses me of being with another man, and I swear I haven’t done anything wrong since we’ve been married.”

“So what does that have to do with me?”

“That’s not all, after our session earlier he said that he heard me say another man’s name in my sleep. I could only imagine it was your name, because you’ve been all I dream about lately,” said Grace.

Kardale looked down at the floor and thought about what Grace had just said. Randy hadn’t said anything to him about it, so he really couldn’t tell if she was being honest. Unless the debt with the three brothers had Randy’s mind so tangled he hadn’t thought to tell him.

Kardale looked her in the eye when he finally broke the moment of silence.

“Listen Grace, I don’t think that’s such a good idea.
